Paul Henry R.H.A.

Resident in Achill 1910 to 1919


Paul Henry's time on Achill was celebrated very successfully over the weekend of Oct. 10th. to 12th.'03 on Achill Island.

For your information the following is what took place over the weekend.

Thursday 9th. Oct.

Special exhibition hung at the Western Light Art Gallery, The Sandybanks, Keel. Tel:098 43325.

New exhibits have been commissioned including sketches and oil paintings from photographs of Paul Henry. The exhibition will also include work stimulated from passages in the Autobiography of Paul Henry R.H.A. "An Irish Portrait"..

Fri 10 Oct at 8.30pm Ted Lavelle's, Cashel.


Opening Night & Welcoming Reception
Lecture by Jim O'Callaghan of the National Gallery of Ireland
"The Achill Island of Paul Henry" - A talk and slide show looking at the island as it was during Paul Henry's stay from 1910-1919.


Sat 11 Oct 1.00pm at The Amethyst, Keel.


Unveiling of a commemorative plaque to Paul Henry R.H.A.

8.30pm Cyril Gray Memorial Hall, Dugort


Lecture by Professor Brian Kennedy of the Ulster Museum, Belfast
"Paul Henry & Achill: enchantment, purpose and fulfillment" - A slide show and lecture on the effect of Achill on Paul Henry and how it shaped his art and career.


Sun 12 Oct 11.00am at Keel Beach.


Paul Henry Walk - A guided walk along the shoreline from Keel to Dooagh, taking in several spots favoured by Paul Henry. This will include Gubelennaun, the rocky point at which he famously tore up his return train ticket and vowed to stay in Achill.
