Achill, Ireland's largest island is situated off the west coast of Co Mayo, with the wild Atlantic breaking on its western shore. It measures 20 km from east to west and 18 km from north to south and is separated from the Corraun Peninsula on the mainland by Achill Sound, a narrow tidal inlet. This channel is bridged by a swing bridge named after Michael Davitt. The fact that the island is one of the most westerly inhabited areas in Europe gives it a special character.

Achill has much to offer the walker:

Peaceful country roads and tracks away from the pressures of everyday life
Unspoilt and unravelled natural beauty
Spectacular coastal scenery and dramatic cliffscapes, including the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Croaghaun
Five magnificent golden, sandy beaches of European Blue Flag status
Vast areas of open mountain and towering hills
A flora as varied as its topography, from common species such as birdsfoot trefoil, found at sea level, to rare arctic alpine species such as Juniper, found on the peaks of Slievemore and Croaghaun.

The area has a wealth of archaeological remains and has a strong historical and cultural heritage synonymous with island life. There is a strong tradition of craftmaking, including the skills of weaving and basketwork.
